Runic logo

The logo of this year's IFRRO AGM is inspired by the runes, the medieval alphabet used in Northern Europe, notably in Scandinavia.

The logo reminds us of the fact that creating and communicating a message has been an important human activity throughout the ages. It also points to the mission of the IFRRO family: to protect copyright and thus enable the access to culture and communication in our societies - today and in the future.

The earliest runic inscriptions date from around 150 AD. While the alphabet was generally replaced by the Latin alphabet along with the Christening of Europe (700 - 1100 AD), the use of runes for specialized purposes continued for many years in Norway and the other Scandinavian countries.

Several inscriptions still exist on runestones from the late Viking age (950 - 1100 AD), especially in Sweden, but also in Denmark and Norway as well as in other countries visited by Norse settlers.
